Profile of a graduate

The graduate is able to solve biological research problems and practical tasks of applied biology independently and creatively. He/she disposes of knowledge and skills in methods of the analysis of living systems on various levels of organization (molecular, cellular, orgasnismal, population and ecological). The graduates are well-educated in basic biological disciplines (genetics, molecular biology, plant and animal physiology, cell biology, immunology, microbiology, botanic, zoology, human biology and others), in chemical disciplines, in some interdisciplinary topics (biophysics, biochemistry, bioinformatics) and they obtain deep theoretical knowledge in the broad spectrum of physiological and zoological sciences, as well. They are also methodically prepared and have practical skills for scientific work in the selected discipline, which they can apply in praxis or during their doctoral studies. The graduates are able to take part on teaching of biological disciplines on universities with biological orientation. The graduates have excellent preconditions for working in research and industrial laboratories, in health care and hygiene institutions, in museums and in authorities of nature and land protection, but also in private companies (e.g. in pharmaceutical or life science industry).

Scope of the absolvents

Graduates have methodical and practical skills necessary for research work in the chosen subject of study, which they can apply in practice or during their studies in the third cycle of university education. They are able to contribute to the teaching of biology-related subjects at university level and have excellent prospects for employment in laboratories in health service, hygiene-service facilities, at the departements of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, as well as universities with similar subject-orientation. Additionally, they can be employed in museums, in, environmental organizations or in the private sector, for example in local and foreign pharmaceutical companies.

Students receive accommodation according to regulations passed by the University Administration of P.J. šafárik University in Košice.

Entrance exam

Applicant is accepted into the maste’s programme without an entrance exam, if the master programme is a acontinuation of the bachelor study programme in the same subject, and if the applicant passed a state examination with the required result equivalent to the state examinations of the bachelor study programme of the Faculty of Natural Sciences at UPJŠ. The standard study-period of the master study programme in that case is two years. If the applicants do not meet the criteria listed above, they can be accepted into the master’s programme on the basis of the results of an entrance exam. In that case, the standard study-period is two or three years. The standard study-period is decided on the basis of the results of the entrance exam and the relevance of the bachelor programme the applicant graduated in.

Requirements for accepting foreign students

Foreign students are accepted on the basis of a contract. There is no tuition fee for study in English.
